Perlette Grapes
The Perlette grape is big, green, and juicy. It’s naturally sweet, and a little tart, which characterizes this variety.
Perlette Grapes
Usually the first variety to be harvested during the season, its berries are round, seedless, and translucent green. Its clusters are medium-sized; the skin soft and thin, although the pulp’s texture is crisp and juicy, of a distinctive soft, sweet taste. The clusters are long and compact. Its name is French, meaning “little pearl”.
Its production in Mexico has developed mainly in the states of Sonora and Baja California, and to a smaller scale in other states of the country. In the case of table grapes, production mostly concentrates in the state of Sonora during the months of May and June, using varieties such as Perlette, Flame Seedless, Thompson Seedless, and Superior (Sugraone).
The international and national markets demand table grapes in seasons different to the ones of Sonora and Baja California, and this demand is satisfied with imported grapes from countries such as the USA and Chile, among others. Because of this, it’s important to evaluate different varieties that could exhibit a better productive behavior than the one observed in the states that currently produce table grapes.
